T6 Heat treatment is a common process used to improve the mechanical properties of aluminum alloys, particularly those in the 6xxx series, such as 6061 and 6063. The “T6” designation indicates that aluminium alloy has been solution heat –treated and artificially aged.

 

  1. Solution heat treatment (T6): The alloy is heated to a temperature range where the alloying elements dissolve into the aluminium matrix, typically 525-595 °C, depending on the specific alloy composition. This temperature is held for a certain period to ensure uniform dissolution of the alloying elements, followed by quenching in water or other suitable media to rapidly cool the material.
  2. Artificial Aging (T6): After quenching, the material is artificially aged by reheating it to a lower temperature, usually between 120-175 deg C, for a specific period. This process allows for the precipitation of fine intermetallic particles within the aluminium matrix, which strengthen the material and improve its mechanical properties, including strength and hardness.

 

T6 heat treatment results in aluminium alloys with improved strength, hardness, and resistance to stress corrosion cracking, making them suitable for a wide range of applications in industries such as aerospace, automotive, construction and marine.
